Discovery - Inspirational TedTalk

How am I participating in this idea at this particular moment?

We searched for video inspiration to help further our ideas for our final creative movement project. The video is a TedTalk about a woman who is a misfit. She talks to misfits because she knows that there are a lot of people that miss fitting in. She herself wanted to be a writer, but when the opportunities came, she realized she wasn't as happy as she thought she would be because she suddenly had to fit into a mold, when she's rather just be herself.

Our project relates because each performer in the movement study will be a misfit. Each one is unique and no one fits in because there is no pattern.

Juliana loves ballet and offers this to our group.  She laughs, "Throughout my life, I've done all sorts of dance.  Dance is really special to me and I am so happy we are combining our talents."  Both Sadie, Abby and Abby offer their past history of hip hop and jazz.  "We're happy to join this group!"  Alana, our fellow gymnast and Claudia can't wait to join in with some salsa from their past cultures!]

Each member of our group brings a different perspective to our final group project.  Natsumi Meyer states" I have an extensive history in Irish Dance.  All throughout my life, I've loved to explore all different genres and combine all of our talents to create something we are all a part of."
Here are our shoes from all of our different styles of dance!  Pointe shoes, ballet shoe, tap shoes, Irish dance shoes, light shoes, pedinis and half soles.

Social Interaction 1

WHAT DID WE DO?

(reflection and description of activity)

WHAT'S NEW AND WHAT'S CHANGED?(include artifacts of learning, collaboration, and iteration)

We made a list of the different dance genres we wanted to explore and our background in dancing. Then we dissected Juliana’s pitch and came up with multiple perspectives, such as street performers, dancers in a class, etc.  Together we pondered the possibility of one song remixed to fit the needs of all our genres but eventually decided on a Spotify playlist that will change whenever a new dancer enters the scene.

Through our discussion the seed has a taken a form consistent through all of our visions. When we first began our social interaction we discovered that group members had different ideas about what Juliana's pitch looked like, and now we have a clearer idea as a group of what our final product will look like.

Attached above is the picture of our "brainstorm board". We took turns taking down major points from the discussion.

Original Idea

WHAT DID WE DO?

(reflection and description of activity)

WHAT'S NEW AND WHAT'S CHANGED?

(include artifacts of learning, collaboration, and iteration)

The original pitch by Juliana was a commentary on how some dancers are particular to their type of dance. Some people have the attitude that their practice is the only “true” form of dance. Our project will show that all dance is art and we are all artists with a different brush. While separate we can make great things, but when working together we can make something extraordinary.
Juliana further pitched that we would have group members demonstrate a genre of dance, and teach it to other group members. At the end of dance, group members would take of their shoes and discover how every dancers is a true dancer.
